The Ashden Trust
Financial assistance is available for projects that focus on climate change, sustainable development and improving the quality of life for deprived communities.
Grant awards range from £1,000 to £20,000.
Description:
The Ashden Trust is part of the group of Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts, an organisation of 18 charitable trusts that work to further charitable and philanthropic causes throughout the UK.
The Trust can provide funding for projects that support its focus on climate change, sustainable development and improving the quality of life for poorer communities.
Grants can be awarded under the following main themes:
1. Environmental Projects UK:
Support for projects that work towards developing solutions to factors that contribute to climate change, including energy efficiency, renewable energy technology, aviation, transport policy and sustainable agriculture.
Projects relating to climate change and sustainable energy can encompass a broad range of approaches, including research, practical action, awareness-raising activity and support for organisations that aim to influence policymaking in the field.
In addition, support can be provided for activities or research to inform policy making and inform the public debate on the environmental impacts of aviation and the benefits of sustainable transport.
2. Sustainable Regeneration:
Funding for projects that aim to help local communities to make the most of resources and develop new skills and abilities to combat social exclusion and further sustainable environmental development. Support is targeted at projects that link people to the natural environment, including promotion of sustainable transport (e.g. cycling), sustainable agriculture and projects to support employment and enterprise for people at risk.
3. People at Risk:
Support for projects that help people at risk to access the direct support services they require, secure more permanent accommodation, achieve economic self-reliance and re-connect with important family and social networks.
The trust aims to support projects that are pioneering in their approach, for example:
- Self-help and peer support groups.
- Self-build housing.
- Peer education and training.
- The provision of employment or work experience, especially for the young or those vulnerable through mental health or substance problems.
4. Community Arts:
Support for creative projects for children - especially the very young - and for young people living in remote rural areas.
Grants in this category will usually be less than £10,000.
The Trust will also consider projects for children and adults with particularly severe mental or physical problems.
5. Social Investment Fund:
The Social Investment Fund will support organisations with charitable objectives that meet the objectives of the Trust through loan finance and potentially an equity stake. This form of funding has been established in response to the need of recipients and beneficiaries for longer-term financial support.
6. Environment Projects Overseas:
Funding for community-based renewable energy projects in areas such as agriculture, education, health and income generation. Support is targeted at projects based in East Africa.
Key Criteria:
Organisations applying for funding from the Ashden Trust should have a proven track record of delivering innovative, effective projects.
